helpful hints

  • play basketball.

The bouncing helps you feel like things are more likely to come up and less likely to come crashing down.  the missed baskets help you quickly adjust to failure and emphasize practice and correction.  The swoosh sound reminds you that every small victory is pleasure in sight sound and feel–you’ll enjoy the execution of excellence and your moment of reflection on it.  Its good for your heart.

  • sketch.

You are the kind of researcher that you are and hell–if it helps you to get a sketch out of your brain, you need to get it out–so get it out.

  • crack yourself up.

Experience lunacy, indulge.  Make a mean (but not too mean) face at a child (of appropriate age for taunting), let a little (just a little) air out of somebody’s tire for taking your parking spot (and cackle in the street afterward), talk to your purple shamrock plant and imagine its responses, share the first raspberry of the harvest with your mother–being sure to eat it the raspberry with two forks, two knives and two plates, scream AND1 when you didn’t earn it.

  • tell the truth

It feels good.

  • call a friend.

Even though you are a lonely researcher, you don’t have to be lonely–call your bestie and let her know you care about her weekend–you’ll be glad you did because she is so full of surprises, insight and compassion and of course, you’ll miss her even more.

  • cut your hair.

When in doubt, let it go.  Maybe this doesn’t translate to all things, but with hair–you can get it back without even trying.

  • go to sleep.

Brush your teeth first, regardless of how boring it will be–ultimately it will be more boring than your blog and you’ll want to do more work.
